About Larry Weir
Biography
Larry Weir began his music career in the San Diego area in 1967, when he was a freshman in high school. As a singer/guitarist inspired by the Beatles and composers Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb, he formed The Royal Enterprise, a pop band whose members included his brother Tom Weir (later a renowned recording engineer) and sister Maria. Within a year the band had a local radio hit with one of Larry's first compositions, "Boy It's All In Your Head".
In 1970, the family moved to Oxnard, California. While in his senior year at Oxnard High, Larry formed The Family and went on to write, produce, and star in three original musicals: "Island" (1971), "Hobos' Jungle" (1972), and "House On Crossroad Alley" (1973), all part of the Ventura County Youth Experimental Theatre, which he co-founded with Maria and Tom.
In 1974 the family moved back to San Diego, and Larry formed The Weirz with all eight of his brothers and sisters. Their 1975 entry on KGB radio's "Homegrown #3" — the autobiographical "Gypsies From Bonsall" — sold over 50,000 copies in Southern California and brought the band to Los Angeles. During a Troubadour show, little brother Michael (later known as Michael Damian) was spotted by CBS's The Young and the Restless, and Larry began writing songs for his character and managing his career.
In 1983, The Weirz signed with Curb Records. The following year brought Michael a Canadian hit with Larry's composition "She's In A Different World" (Columbia), featured on NBC's The Facts of Life. Composer and producer credits on film musicals followed: Teen Witch (1989) became a cult classic, and Dream A Little Dream (1989) produced a #1 Billboard hit with the co-production of Michael Damian's "Rock On" (A&M/Cypress). The follow-up "Was It Nothing At All" earned a BMI Publishing Award for most-played song of 1990.
The mid-1990s found Larry, Tom, and Michael Parnell scoring the CBS primetime series Dangerous Curves. In 1995, Larry began calling radio stations personally on behalf of artists, developing the expertise that became National Record Promotion (NRP). In 1998, he teamed with Paul Loggins to launch New Music Weekly, now one of the most important trade publications for breaking new artists.
In 2008, the Brothers Weir — Larry, Michael, and Tom — formed Caption Records. Releases included Teen Witch: The Musical, Buck McCoy's Top Dog, and the soundtrack to Michael Damian's film Moondance Alexander. Larry's compositions have appeared in 30 Rock (NBC), Flicka Country Pride, Marley & Me: The Puppy Years, and The Sweeter Side of Life (Hallmark). NRP continues as one of the top radio promotion companies in the United States.
